Here's a transcript of our short interview with Ryan.
How old are you?
I am 14.
How long have you been riding a bike?
I have been riding a bike since age 5, but really started to bike seriously three years ago or so.
What's your favorite kind of bike riding?
I really love mountain biking.
You took VigilantVelo stickers into bike stores. Can you tell us about that?
Yes. Well at first I was really nervous going into bike shops and talking with complete strangers about the stickers and actually trying to persuade them to buy a box. But after about my third visit to a shop I got used to it and it started to get fun. I have since been to eight shops and feel pretty great about what I did. I haven't sold a large box of stickers, but our company became recognized.
What are the streets like in your neighborhood - are they safe for biking?
I think the streets in my neighborhood are fairly safe for biking but that's just because I live in a small town with not many cars.
Have you ever been hurt on a bike? How?
I have definitely crashed more times then I can count but luckily have never been hit by a car.
Has anyone you known been hurt while riding a bike on a street?
About a year back my dad was commuting back from the city wen he was about to pass a group of tourists on rental bikes. He rang his bell and one of them turned her bike to see what the noise was and they crashed. My dad had to have shoulder surgery and it took him out of biking for about half a year.
